Operation Market Garden was one of the largest allied operations from the Second World War and took place in September 1944. The year 2019 marked the 75th anniversary of the operation and our battlefield tours ensure that this event will never be forgotten. The purpose of Operation Market Garden was to get hold of the bridges over the Maas, Waal and Rhine in the Netherlands and to force the Germans back to the East. They hoped to be able to end the war before Christmas with a rapid advance to Berlin, but this unfortunately went a different direction. During Operation Market Garden, airborne troops had conquered the strategic bridges, but the ground troops then had to head north on a narrow dual carriageway. Soon the ground troops were exposed to the deadly fire, because they were vulnerable to counter attacks on both sides on this road. The route therefore became known as "Hell’s Highway". With this Market Garden day tour we visit the locations that were at the start of this operation and you get an impression of what happened in September 1944.
